Following a 12 year stint at the helm of one of Victoria's most successful brewpubs, legendary brewmaster Sean Hoyne decided to open his own brewery in Victoria, BC. Caste worked with Sean from the brewery's inception, to develop a brand that reflected his approach to making beer: finely crafted but not too serious, contemporary with a healthy respect for tradition.

Caste worked to conceptualize imagery, create custom typography and illustrations, and manage print production for the labels of Hoyne's first four releases. The playful, hand-crafted illustrations reference local lore, folk tales, and some of Sean's personal anecdotes, while the classically formed, foil-stamped logo adds an upscale touch to give a nod to the quality and craftsmanship found in the beer itself.

Caste's work with Hoyne Brewing Co., is ongoing.

Olio is one of Vancouver's youngest and most eclectic cultural festivals. Featuring over 30 events in 4 days, spanning Music, Skate, Art, Film, and Comedy, the festival needed a marketing piece that communicated everything from ticketing, hotel, and venue information, to details about each performer.

Caste worked with Olio to develop a 96 page pocket-sized guidebook that reflected the energy and eclecticism for which the festival has become known.

Victoria BC's legendary PIG BBQ Joint approached Caste to help develop a visual concept and graphics for their first food truck.

Referencing the imagery of classic 80's airbrushed fantasy mural vans and the typography of hair metal bands, the truck presents the pig as an archetypal epic hero. The pig's epic story is told in terms of good and evil, and features flying unicorn pigs, a bikini-clad babe, an evil taskmaster knight, a giant wooden trojan pig, and triple side-by-side erupting volcanoes.

This undyed, 100% wool rug is an experimentation in process-based design practice. The rug is made using a combination of traditional wet-felting and needle-felting processes. The wool was sourced directly from farmers working with the "Navajo Churro" breed of sheep, brought to an artisan wool cleaning and processing facility, and then felted by hand in the Caste studio. The rug is designed to resemble the hide of a "Navajo Churro" sheep in texture, yet the wool is arranged to create rhythm in the color and density of curls, and is felted into a more typical rug shape.

This is a one-of-a-kind item.

Size: 54" x 33"

$1865.00

Custom order only. Please e-mail to request a purchase. Dimension-specific commissions accepted by the studio.

The design for the Perpetual Calendar No.1 is the result of independent exploration in the Caste studio. Inspired equally by Dieter Rams, Enzo Mari, and Massimo Vignelli, it is a low-fi, hand-assembled response to the increasingly high-tech auto-produced objects that currently fill the market. Comprised almost entirely of CNC laser-cut Baltic Birch plywood parts, each calendar is assembled and finished by hand. The date on the calendar is changed by way of a small wheel, mounted on the top of each info-column. The date-change mechanism was deliberately kept as a manual operation, so as to engage the user in active recognition of the passing of time.

This product is currently in Canadian production, but its time-consuming, hand assembly process limits production to a maximum of 500 units per year.

Caste worked with artisan leather craftsman, Ken Diamond to create a small preview sales package to promote his newly-minted line of moccasins and his ongoing work with bags, belts, wallets, and other leather accessories. The packages were produced by hand, sealed with wax, housed in machine-sewn butcher paper, and sent out to fine retailers all over the world.</description>
